Our Kitchen Transformation: Before & After

February 17, 2019 by Alyssa

We made a few kitchen updates in January and today I’m sharing our kitchen transformation from when we purchased the house in November 2014 to now.

Kitchen After

Our new kitchen has been complete for about a month now so I thought it’s about time to share the updates on the blog.  Luckily, I was able to pull a few photos from the real estate listing of the before kitchen which shows the original kitchen so you can see the full transformation.

As you can see, our old kitchen had standard builder’s grade cabinetry with a wood tone and cheap, ugly brown countertops complimented with a rough natural stone backsplash.  The floor was a brown square tile that I hated.  The kitchen also had a huge rectangular fluorescent light above the island and a hideous chandelier in the little breakfast nook.

It was a basic kitchen and I loved nothing about it.

When we first moved in, <3M and I repainted all the cabinets white which helped brighten the area and installed hardware on all the drawers and cupboards.  We also swapped out the fluorescent light for the glass pendant lights you see now (something I’m still not crazy about but thought I’d love when purchased) and changed the chandelier for the hanging shade (another purchase I’m still meh about).

These original changes were cheap and minimal and slowly helped improve the space.  After these initial updates, we saved for a couple of years and finally had our floors on the entire first floor updated in December 2017.  It was a whole hot mess that I never blogged about because I couldn’t relive the dust, cold, and cleaning we endured for the week it took to tear out and install the new tile.  But the floors, a wood tile installed by The Carpet Stop, are something I love and I couldn’t be happier with the final look.

This year, our big project was updating the backsplash and countertops. I knew I wanted a white and gray kitchen.  I love how clean a white kitchen looks and I love the way a gray & white kitchen makes the space appear bright and fresh.

Before landing on an installer, we had a couple estimates from a few different places and finally settled on JL Cabinet & Granite for our countertops after a coworker recommended them to me.  JL Cabinet & Granite was by far the cheapest quote we came across and it included the full countertop and backsplash demo, stone, countertop installation, and a new large, one bowl sink.

For the countertops, I chose a quartz called carrara marmi that looks similar to marble.  It’s white with small light veining that provides depth to the stone.  Originally, I had my heart set on granite or marble countertops but after researching different stones, quartz was the more reasonable option when it came to both price and durability.

Doesn’ that cake look tasty? It’s a grapefruit cake, recipe here!

To contrast the quartz countertops, I found a neutral gray subway tile on Wayfair.  I was very particular with the gray tile selection as I wanted something warmer without blue undertones.  My fear was choosing a tile with blue undertones that would pick up on the navy blue wall in the living room and make the kitchen appear more blue than gray.

After a few tile samples from Lowes, Home Depot, and Wayfair, I finally found a winner.  For the tile installation, we hired a contractor on Thumbtack who quoted us cheaply and go the job done with only a few communication & timing bumps along the way.

The last few updates to our kitchen included the new sink, , a new light over the sink, and a few under cabinet lights….because I love all the brightness!

Overall, I really like our new kitchen.  It’s fresh and clean, just as I wanted, with lots of light.

However, the biggest win in my book is the sink! The deep, one bowl sink is a game changer.  I love that it fits all my pans and cookie trays.  It also means I can ‘hide’ dirty dishes in there quickly in the morning because they actually fit in the sink, unlike my previous, tiny double sink.

So, is this my dream kitchen? No, but that’s not what we were going for.  We were looking for updates that fit the current space and layout on a budget (we actually came in under budget!) and I’m pretty stoked with where we landed.

The Pantry Project: How I Created a Pinterest-worthy Pantry

July 29, 2018 by Alyssa

I’ve always lusted after a Pinterest-worthy pantry and now I have one thanks to the DIY plan from Ms. Placed Professional Organizers.

I had the opportunity to work with Ms. Placed and received the DIY service
complimentary through an Instagram promotion. All opinions are my own.

I’ve never had a messy kitchen pantry.  It was always loosely organized as in, I knew where everything went and everything had a ‘place’ but I often lusted for a Pinterest-worthy pantry of my own.

Pantry Love

So, when I had the opportunity to work with the wonderfully organized ladies of Ms. Placed, who offer professional organizing services, I decided that rather than just organizing my pantry, I’d take it as an opportunity to truly revamp the space.

Ms. Placed Professional Organizers offers a few different organizational plans, the one I received was the DIY Plan which includes

  • A 60-90 minute walkthrough in-person
  • A customized plan  delivered within 3 business days
  • and follow up emails after 7 days and 30 days

Basically, Ms. Placed provides a full plan for the room and you’re left to purchase all the supplies and do the actual organizing.

I worked with Layne (owner) and Melynda from Ms. Placed. The first thing Layne had me do was share photos of my current layout and create a vision board for my future pantry. I found inspiration for my pantry on Pinterest (obviously) and shared my Pinterest board with Melynda, who ultimately created my pantry plan.  My pantry inspiration was full of glass jars, wicker baskets and lots of chalkboard labels (sooo white-girl basic, I know.)

After sharing my board with Melynda, she paid a visit to my house to discuss what I wanted functionally from my pantry and to see my ‘mess’ in person.  I explained that the pantry currently housed a lot of different items but I felt the space wasn’t working well and I wanted a way to store some of my larger appliances in the pantry in order to give me more cabinet space.

Melynda organized my pantry into a few different categories

  • Canned goods
  • Dry/Bulk goods
  • Snacks
  • Spices
  • Dog
  • Baking
  • Drinks & Alcohol
  • Utility
  • Recycling
  • and Appliances

Before she left, Melynda took measurements of all my shelves — width, height, depth and also measured the appliances I currently store (or wanted to store) in the pantry.  A few days later, I received a detailed plan from Melynda instructing me on how to organize my pantry, where to put everything on each of the shelves and links to product recommendations for baskets, lazy susans, glass jars, etc.  Each storage option had a recommended product as well as alternate products in a range of budgets. She also included a count of how many of each product I’d need and specific on sizes for jars, baskets, etc. Below are the products (or similar products) I chose:

In addition to the recommendations, Melynda also provided a sketch of the pantry that worked as a visual guide on how to set up the pantry once I purchased and organized all of my items.

Pantry Visual Guide

And this is where I decided to make the leap and truly create a Pinterest-worth pantry.  Rather than just organize it, I chose to repaint it all so it was not only functional but beautiful.

I again drew on my Pinterest inspiration. I wanted a space that was clean, bright and hid all the ugly packaging that most goods arrive in.  I also wanted something that had a pop of color which in the end, inspired me to paint the back of my pantry a catching jade green from Benjamin Moore.

Pantry Paint

In addition to the green, I also repainted the rest of the walls and the shelves a clean, bright white, previously they were more beige in color.  I again used Benjamin Moore paint but their cabinetry paint (for longevity) in Chantilly Lace. With the bright white walls and shelves (and by swapping out my pantry lightbulb from a 60W to a 75W) I created a bright, clean space to showcase all of my items.

Also, to ensure the longevity of my pantry, I sealed the back walls and shelves with two coats of shellac.  This ensured that as I slide pantry items in and out of the shelves, the paint wouldn’t scape or chip off quite as easily.

Lastly, I lined the bottom of my wicker baskets with felt, using a hot glue gun to secure it all in place. This might have been going a bit overboard but if I was giving my pantry a makeover, I was going to do it right! Like the shellac, the felt ensured the baskets wouldn’t wreck my newly painted shelves and would more easily slide in and out.

As I was nearing the finish line of my pantry project, the last thing I had to do was sort through all the pantry items — toss what I didn’t want, donate items I’d never use, and categorize everything according to the plan Melynda gave me.  When it came time to put it back together, I followed Melynda’s plan almost exactly, changing the placement of just a few items to align with how often I actually use them.

Overall, I love love love my pantry!

Even though it was a TON of work — I estimate it took about 30 hours in total to hunt down all of my supplies, choose paint, remove items & sort, clean the pantry prior to painting, paint the pantry, seal the shelves, wash the new containers, glue on felt, organize my goods, and put it all back in place!

PHEW!

That’s a lot just to type.  But seriously I love it.

In fact, I often find myself just standing in the pantry door staring at everything.  Now, I just have to ensure it stays that way!

Have you ever created a Pinterest-worthy room? How do you organize your pantry?

Modern Holiday Table Setting with Mason Jars, Evergreens, and Cinnamon Sticks

December 8, 2017 by Alyssa

Holiday decorating doesn’t have to be stressful! You can easily create a modern holiday table setting with mason jars, fresh evergreen boughs, and cinnamon sticks to give your holiday table a seasonal touch!

I don’t really love decorating for the holiday season. It seems like a lot of fuss for just a few weeks but this year, <3M really wanted to decorate…so we did! And this year, for once, I’m quite happy with how it turned out. So much so, I was inspired to create a modern holiday table setting for a ladies night at the house.

Modern Holiday Table Setting

Wanting to make the table setting special for all the girls but not wanting to drop a bunch of cash, I was inspired to create a festive yet affordable modern holiday scene.

To keep the decorations simple and natural, I utilized a few items from around the house while incorporating fresh, seasonal decorations like cinnamon sticks and cranberries. I also picked up a few candles and fillers from Michaels to help pull the look together.

Lastly, I wanted to incorporate a bit of pine into the modern holiday table setting to add a bit of height to the table and draw even more on the holiday spirit.

Unfortunately, living in Texas means I can no longer traipse into my backyard and cut the greens from the pine trees. This is seriously the one time I wish I were in New York, for the convenience of pine tree limbs.

Modern Holiday Table Setting

On my quest to find greens, I went to Home Depot and debated spending $15 on a wreath that I would simply tear apart.

As I walked aimlessly around Home Depot debating the cost, I found a pile of evergreen branches that were obviously going to be discarded. I dug through the pile and chose a large branch with enough fresh greens to decorate my table.

Apprehensively, I asked a salesperson if I could take this large limb home for free and although I was hesitant, the Home Depot salesperson told me it was common for customers to take the discarded boughs!  Elated, I almost skipped to the car knowing my vision was finally coming together with this last piece.

Assembling my modern holiday table setting took about 20 minutes. Once set with the plates, it looked simple, modern and festive!  If you’re looking for a quick yet affordable table setting, I highly recommend this DIY look. And the best part, the mason jar setting will last for weeks so you can utilize it throughout the course of the holiday season.
