Loving This Week 2

Loving This Week

This week was a bit rough for me. I was ridiculously sick, even home from work on Monday.
And if any of you know me, I hate being home all day. I don’t do well sitting still.

Sick Day

And I definitely hate that being sick means no working out. With the exception of a quick dog walk, I haven’t had an exercise inducing endorphin boost since LAST Sunday.  I’m feeling a bit better now and have a few fun things I’m looking forward to this weekend.

  1. I’m dead set on making it to the Love Cycling Studio‘s Taylor Swift themed ride tomorrow morning & riding to Shake It Off.
  2. Sunday is mine and <3M’s 2nd wedding anniversary (the India one) and I want to be 100% so we can celebrate in style. We’re thinking about purchasing bikes so the two of us can ride the trail of Austin together!

India Wedding

Anyways, here’s some things that did make my week awesome.

I took some downtime on Monday while sick to watch Cooked on Netflix, a short documentary about why cooking is important, how different cultures cook, and how American’s are losing the practice. If you are a foodie who loves learning about different cultures and the chemistry of food check it out.

Cooked

It’s a four part series is narrated by Michael Pollan (NYT writer and author of The Omnivore’s Dilemma, Cooked, In Defense of Food, and Food Rules among others). Pollan travels the world learning about the importance of cooking in other cultures, how food impacts lives, routine, and health. In some episodes he learns how to perfect cooking techniques — whether it be cooking over fire or pot cooking. In others, he explores how chemistry plays a role in creating delicious food such as the use of yeast in bread making or bacteria in cheese and chocolate.

On a less serious note but still food related, Too Faced came out with a Peanut Butter & Jelly makeup palette this week. I haven’t made the leap to purchasing it yet but I’ve definitely been dwelling on it. The colors looks great, lots of  shimmery bronzes and peachy tones plus some vibrant purple and violets! If you try it, let me know.

Also this week, while wandering around Target waiting for my prescription to get filled, I happened across the new Oh Joy! line and fell in love with all the adorable gold animal figurines wearing party hats (no longer available…).

I absolutely loved the little hedgehog and couldn’t put him down. I decided he needed to come home with me and would fit in perfectly on my desk at work with all my cupcake decorations. One of my Aunt’s had a hedgehog as a pet while I was growing up and I absolutely loved going to her house to play with him since it was such a unique pet, this figurine reminds me of that little hedgehog!

Lastly, Alton Brown recently wrote an article on How to Read a Recipe that I found ridiculously interesting. I think his most important tips are to

  1. Sit Down – Meaning take a breath, relax and really read the recipe like you were reading a book.
  2. Always triple check the cooking or baking times and their ‘Doneness Indicators.’ – He nailed it when he said your eyes and ears should be working in tangent with your cooking timer.

When I talk to people about why they don’t cook or bake the reason is usually because “It never turns out right!” I believe this is because they didn’t actually read the recipe. They simply skimmed it, didn’t take into consideration to how the ingredients should be prepped, missed the timing of when something should be added, or how to incorporate the ingredient with everything else. Alton Brown does a great job at explaining how to read a recipe and highlighting (literally) what words are important for success. If you’re new to the kitchen, give it a quick read!

Did you have anything great happen this week or have fun weekend plans?
Do you usually read a recipe all the way through? Or do you skim it and wing it?

Loving This Week 1

Loving This Week

Just a quick check-in for the week to share a few of the things I’m loving this week, or in the blog world “swooning over.”

Side Note: I actually hate the word swoon and all of its forms. It reminds me of some twitterpated girl clutching a bouquet of flowers to her chest, her eyes back in a heavenly manner while swaying slight from giddy happiness.  I hereby vow never to use the word swooning again.

Now that I’m off my pedestal, here’s some things I’m truly loving in life, my kitchen, and home!…

Things I’m Loving Lately

July 24, 2015 by Alyssa

Below’s just a quick list of some of my favorite things as of lately in all part of my life! Hopefully you’ll be inspired to check out some for yourself!

Avocado Toast  – I used to be all about sweet breakfasts, rarely breaking from my oatmeal, berries & peanut butter mix but for the past few months I’ve been digging this savory breakfast — rotating my avocado toast toppings between salmon, chive cream cheese, and cucumbers or lemony ricotta and hard boiled eggs. It’s delish!

Chainbreaker White IPA – <3M and I stumbled upon Descheutes Brewery earlier this Spring and although I have yet to have a beer of their’s I didn’t like, this Chainbreaker White IPA is by far my favorite. It’s a mix of traditional hefeweizen with the slight bittery hops of an IPA. Perfect for summer sippin’

Sally Hansen Miracle Gel – This is not a new to me product, I’ve been loving it for over a year now and am still obsessed. This is the route to a flawless, perfect at-home manicure every time. It’s truly rock solid in 5 minutes. Perfect for the busy girl! My current color is Sugar Fix!

Instacart – I am obsessed with this service. I LOVE grocery shopping but somedays, it’s just not in the cards and Instacart makes picking up our weekly groceries so much easier. They also have an option to choose alternative items should your first pick not be in stock or you can text your shopper if needed. It’s all seamless and you can get your groceries delivered in less than two hours!

Yasso Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Bars – I love ice cream but keeping a tub of it in the house can’t happen, it’ll disappear within a week. These cookie dough bars are portion controlled (100 calories, 2.5g fat, & 5g protein), made with Greek yogurt and best of all, are seriously delicious! Try them. You’ll thank me.

iHeart Radio App – I know live radio is dwindling but I still love a good morning radio talk show — specifically the Bobby Bones Show. And since I no longer own an actual radio outside of my car, this app lets me tune in each morning as I get ready for work. I can also listen to my old favorite Rochester station, Drive 100.5 anytime, anywhere! This is by far, one of my favorite, most used apps!

Camp Gladiator – This past Spring I got into a real workout rut — I was either at the gym on the elliptical with a magazine or heading to spin class and my body had become complacent. In March both <3M and I started CG and we’ve been going 3-4 times a week ever since. We absolutely love it! The workouts are challenging, forever changing, and there’s a huge community/social aspect that ties everything together. I’ve also noticed physical improvements since joining which is a major plus and it has definitely pulled me out of my workout rut! <3CG

New York City Cupcake Review

February 5, 2014 by Alyssa

Molly Ron, Berry, Cake BatterMy friends think I’m obsessed with cupcakes and when you consider  all the facts, I can see how they’ve come to that conclusion..

Let’s start at the beginning —

While  pursuing my MBA in Marketing at RIT, I was drawn to a certain, strong entrepreneurial cupcake shop owner, turned frosting extrordinaire, Heather “Cupcakes” Saffer.  As a final grad school project, a team and I created a marketing plan for her bakery, at the time – The Cupcake Dreamery.

Over the course of our project work, Heather and I became friends.  Afterwards, I helped her with a few cupcake-oriented PR needs & basic social media setup [now, Ms. Cupcakes could write a book on social media marketing!].

I spent a lot of time in her cupcake bubble and even worked an afternoon shift at her second bakery, Dollop Gourmet, oncewhen she was short staffed.  Having the chance to decorate cupcakes and watching customers smile as they received their treats was one of my favorite food service experiences!

During my final year in Rochester, I made many visits to the Dollop bakery to chat cupcakes with Heather and sample her newest creation.  This was my weekly mental break from everyday life.

Molly Peach Cobbler

I believe this time spent at Dollop opened the door into the magical, sprinkle-sparkled world of cupcakes.

After moving to Austin, I had a short stint of unemployment where I kept myself busy working behind the counter at Delish, an ATX cupcakery [now full-on bakery].  When I found out Delish wouldn’t let me frost the cupcakes without going through “training” I realized they were oblivious to my intrinsic baking talents and ditched Delish venturing back into the corporate world to pursue a traditional career.

A whirlwind trip later, I’m in New York City and Heather Cupcakes comes to visit me.  I plan out an entire day where she and I venture from NYC cupcakery to cupcakery reviewing bakery creations & concepts  while eating ourselves into a sugar coma. Her motivation was purely research oriented while my purpose was to find “The Best Ever Cupcake” [Mission accomplished].

There’s been a few other random cupcake acts in-between as well, such as draggin’ M<3 to a cupcake festival where I willingly paid to launch cupcakes at a guy dressed in a pig costume.

And for the record, I hit him right in where it counts!

258398_654374680896_4931350_o

I’ve also been featured multiple times on the famous cupcake blog Cupcakes Take the Cake, obsessively DVR Cupcake Wars (reruns included), will predictably show up at social gatherings with a plate of cupcakes in tow, excitedly attended any and all cupcake-themed events, and I consider it completely normal behavior for my friends to meet me at a new cupcakery to catch up rather than meeting for coffee or a cocktail elsewhere.

Lastly, let’s not forget, I got engaged at a cupcakery here in Austin.

Considering my above history with cupcakes,  I’d say I’m obsessed too!

But what you don’t know, is that I don’t actually like cake.

[I’ll pause while you gasp]

Honestly, I’ve never been a fan of cake and 10 times out of 10, I will choose a cookie, brownie, or ice cream over cake any day [unless of course it’s ice cream cake…]

196060_618438781726_3158263_n

Don’t believe me? Then ask the people who actually see me eat the cupcakes. They’ve seen me implement my Bite Rule….Basically, I go all Cupcake Wars on those little cakes….

Bite 1: Taste the Frosting
Bite 2: Taste the Cake
Bite 3: Taste the Filling  [No filling? That’s a shame…Proceed to Bite 4]
Bite 4: All together now! [Frosting, Cake, Filling]

Four bites max.  That’s all I need.  I can tell right then whether or not it’s a great cupcake and I don’t need anymore.  <3M knows, he’s eaten many deconstructed cupcakes after I’ve torn my way through them to inspect and carefully evaluate every element. After I make my official tasting decision, I move on to the next cupcake in line or pass the remaining goods to anyone nearby.

SweetRevenge

Still think I’m obsessed? Maybe you’re right. I am but it’s not with eating them…

I like cupcakes because they’re just plain cute!

They’re pretty to look at, portion controlled desserts that offer unlimited flavor combinations with cake flavors, fillings, frostings, & toppings.

I especially enjoy mini cupcakes because I have less wasted cake and can still enjoy tasting each of the elements.  Plus, mini cupcakes are much more fun – everything’s cuter when it’s tiny!  [Baked By Melissa knows a thing or two about minis!]

I also truly enjoy baking and decorating cupcakes.  I love that cupcakes require multiple steps from assembling the batter and making the frosting to filling the piping bag and the intricacy that can go into decorating each one separately.

But even after all that, my favorite thing about cupcakes is that they make people smile.  Have you ever given someone a cupcake and watch their face light up?  They get a huge smile and it’s a wonderful feeling knowing you made that something, that’s so small, so pretty and so delicious that it brings happiness to another person.

baked by melissa

That’s the real reason why I love cupcakes – because I love watching other people smile when they receive one!
