What’s in My Carry-on and My Strategy for International Flights

September 20, 2019 by Alyssa

My carry-on essentials when flying and how I stay entertained (and be productive) during long international flights.

Carry_On_3

Today, <3M and I take off on a two week trip to Spain to celebrate his birthday and our 5-year [Austin] wedding anniversary.  It’s a trip we’ve been planning for months and our itinerary includes time in Barcelona, an Espana soccer match, dining at a Michelin restaurant, beaches in San Sebastian, and a few day trips to smaller towns in both Spain and neighboring France for vino.

While I’m excited and love traveling, I hate leaving my puppy girl Stella — but at least she’ll be snuggled and loved by our longtime dog & house sitter while we’re away.  While I was packing, Stella just sat there watching me load up my bags with sad puppy dog eyes (heartbreaking!).  While curating my bag with Stella, I thought it may be fun to share with you all what’s in my bag for international flights.

Carry-On_View

My carry-on essentials include:

All the headphones. Yes, I travel with 4 pairs of headphones — my bluetooth noise-canceling headphones, bluetooth headphones for workouts (for when I get to my destination), earpods with a lightning connector, and good ol’ auxiliary headphones to plug into the plane’s television screens.

Face wipes & rose facial toner so I can quickly wipe off makeup and refresh during long international flights. The rose mist just makes traveling feel luxurious plus the aloe adds extra hydration.

Moisturizer & eye cream plus eye drops because hydration is essential when you’re sitting in the dry airplane air for +8-hours.  Right now, I’m traveling with these sample packs from Olehenriksen but usually, I have a small travel container I fill with skincare favorites for my carry-on. I also love having eye drops handy to fight red, tired eyes.

Hydrating face mask & under-eye masks to apply before landing.  Now, don’t feel all weird about putting a mask on mid-flight.  It’s dark so no one will see you and seriously, get over yourself.  What’s great about this Origins mask is that you can easily wipe it off with face wipes and any excess can be rubbed in to provide extra moisture of your skin.  The under-eye masks also help brighten up your face and rejuvenate sleep-deprived eyes right before landing.

Mini makeup kit and hairbrush. My carry-on makeup usually includes concealer, powder, and a mini mascara so I feel a little better when I land and can quickly freshen up. A small travel brush is also great and something I keep in my purse most days.

Sleep necessities: eyemask, earplugs, and neck pillow for sleeping on the plane. There are carry-on must-haves and I cannot sleep without them.

Fuzzy socks. My feet always get cold on a plane which makes it difficult to sleep. These extra thick, extra tall socks help keep my toes and ankles warm during flights. I also pack some ‘plane pajamas‘ which is a pair of yoga pants and a hoodie so I can change into comfortable sleeping clothes when I’m ready to get some rest.

My Swigg water bottle to keep my water cool for hours on end during the flight because…hydration (do you see a theme here?)

Toothbrush, travel toothpaste, mouthwash, and chapstick. Enough said.

Hand sanitizer & hand lotion. Planes are loaded with germs and again, gotta keep your body hydrated while flying. I also like having the lavender lotion with me because it’s relaxing.

Charging cables & an external charge because the worst thing that could happen on a plane is running out of battery.

Protein bars, stevia, tea bags, and gum.  I love carrying tea bags so I can make hot tea while on the plane to sweeten with stevia (plane tea sucks!).  Protein bars (right now I’m digging Oatmega bars) are key in case I get snacky or dislike any of the meals provided. And gum, obviously.

When it comes to in-flight entertainment, I have a few strategies to ensure I stay entertained.

Books. I load up my Kindle app with a few different book options — something fluffy like a young adult read, something suspenseful that will hook me and keep me engaged, and something educational in case I feel motivated to sharpen my skills.  Currently, I’ve downloaded The Witch Elm, Fix Her Up and Nudge.

Digital Magazines. If you’re an Amazon Prime member then you need to take advantage of the free Prime Magazines.  There’s a ton of options and you can download 10 magazines for free. I prefer the easy stuff like Cosmo and Women’s Health.

Audiobooks & podcasts.  Much like loading up my Kindle app, I also download a handful of new podcast episodes, right now I’m really into Swindled & Reply All.  I also grab a few audiobooks from the library so I have things to listen to. My stock for Spain includes The Futures, The Turn of the Key, and One Day in December.

Netflix & Amazon Prime Video allow you to download shows and movies to your device, so before a trip I like to download 3-5 movies, typically documentaries or chick-flicks in case the in-flight entertainment on the plane is lame. This trip I’m looking to watch Dumplin’ (with Jennifer Aniston), Someone Great, Book Club, and The Great Hack.

iPhone clean up. I like to be productive on the plane so while I’m stuck in a seat for hours on end, I attempt to do something useful.  During long flights, I like to review my albums photos and delete anything I don’t need, take the time to reorganize my apps into folders, delete apps I don’t use, and even check on the security & notification permissions of apps to simplify my life.  I typically do this on the return flight so I can sort my vacation photos.

While I never use all of these devices during a single flight, I like knowing I have the options at my disposal because I never know what type of mood I’ll be in.

So tell me, what’s in your carryon and how do you survive long plane trips?

Eco-Friendly Kitchen Products for Living a Greener Life

June 20, 2019 by Alyssa

Today I’m sharing my favorite eco-friendly products I use in the kitchen that help me live a greener life.

Over the years, I’ve been ‘green curious’ but in the past year or two being green has become something I truly value and it’s something I strive to practice in my day-to-day. I’m not perfect with it by any means but I try to be conscious of my choices to live a greener life.

I think being green or eco-friendly or sustainable means different things to different people.  I also believe there are different categories of ‘green’ which can lend itself to food, products, daily practices, transportation, and even fashion or makeup.

What being green means to me

Being more conscious of the products I buy and the chemicals in those products that I bring into my home and put in my body.

Purchasing foods that are organic, fair-trade, local, and non-GMO, and choosing free-range and hormone-free animal products as much as possible

It also means prioritizing reusable products and when I’m not, ensuring I’m practicing proper recycling guidelines for my city’s recycling program

Green products I’m loving in my kitchen

If you’re looking to be a little greener in your everyday life, one easy way to start is in your kitchen.  Below I share my favorite green products that make my kitchen more eco-friendly and bring joy to my everyday life!

Reusable Silicone Bags: These bags are biodegradable, leakproof, and come in an assortment of sizes.  We use them for everything from storing snacks to take to work, to packing sandwiches and storing leftover veggies.  They’re thick, durable and easy to clean. You can even bake your food in them since they’re oven proof (my colleague tested this and was pleasantly surprised with the results).  To wash, you simply rinse them and turn them inside out to dry then they’re ready to use again!

Silicon Ziplock Bags

Colony Co. Reusable Mesh & Bulk Bin Bags: I’m sure you’re already bringing reusable bags to the grocery store so why not step it up and bring your own reusable produce and bulk bin bags to use in place of the standard plastic bags provided by the store.  These come in an assortment of sizes and are conveniently machine washable.  And, because they’re not made of thin plastic, your bulky potatoes or pointy vegetable won’t break through the bag so your produce stays damage-free until you get home.

Reusable Bulk & Produce Bags

Bee’s Wrap: If you’re using plastic wrap or aluminum foil to cover bowls, then why not switch to Bee’s Wrap.  (Did you know, plastic wrap lingers in our environment for up to 2,000 years?). Bee’s Wrap is all natural, compostable, and has a lovely beeswax scent to it.  The product molds easily over any size bowl, you simply warm the wrap with your hands and it sticks to itself.  You can wash the wrap with cool water before reuse and each wrap lasts at least a year, depending on how often you’re using it.

Bee's Wrap

On-the-Go Reusable Straws: This is an easy one and something everyone (and most companies) have already switched to using. But if you’re a straw fan like me, you can now easily bring your own straw along for those times when a more eco-friendly straw isn’t available.  These reusable straws are flexible, come an individual cleaner, and each has its own carrying case so it can easily be thrown in your bag and stored away when not in use.

Art of Green & Unpaper Towels

Art of Green: I’ve tried a lot of ‘green’ cleaning products and I’ve found that most of them either smell like vinegar or leave streaks across my counter.  But not Art of Green.  Yes, Art of Green did send me complimentary product but I’m sharing it here because I’m truly impressed with the scent, quality, and results of the products. Art of Green is Austin based and recently launched in H-E-B. The products don’t contain any harsh or toxic chemicals, they’re USDA-Certified Bio-based, made with 100% post-consumer recycled materials, and have a biodegradable formula. Grab a coupon for your own Art of Green purchase at H-E-B.

Unpaper Towels: We used to use a ton of paper towels in our kitchen.  And while we haven’t rid our kitchen of paper towels, we have started using fewer thanks to the Unpaper Towel.  These thin cloth towels help us keep our kitchen tidy and easily wipe up messes with Art of Green cleaner. I keep a tub under the sink to store used Unpaper Towels until the end of the week when we throw them in the washer to be sanitized and reused.

Unpaper Towels

Natural Sponges: These little sponges make me so happy! I love how they come slim in a package then puff up into a soft natural sponge.  I keep these near my kitchen sink to clean up quick messes. Also, unlike synthetic sponges, natural sponges don’t retain odor and have a naturally occurring enzyme that inhibits mold and bacteria growth. Plus, their space-saving size when not in use is an added bonus!

Natural Sponge

Are you already using some of the products I mentioned above? I’d love to add more green products to my kitchen, so tell me, what are some of your favorite, tried-and-true eco-friendly products? And don’t forget to head over to my Instagram for a chance to win your own bundle of Art of Green cleaning products.

Disclosure: While Art of Green did not sponsor this post, they did provide complimentary product and offer to support a giveaway on Instagram for participants located in the USA.

My 2019 Baking Bucket List

December 31, 2018 by Alyssa

In place of New Year’s resolutions, I’ve created a Baking Bucket List, choosing one baking recipe to tackle and perfect each month this year.

Baking Bucket List Small

I don’t usually have New Year’s resolutions, typically, my resolutions are vague thoughts on things I’d like to do throughout the year ‘read more books, drink more water, budget our finances.’

And, since I know I’m not really a New Year’s resolution person, I thought having a 2019 Baking Bucket List would be a good way to work my way through a few classic desserts and perfect my baking skills over the course of the year.

Some of the baking items I chose are desserts that require specific techniques and practices — croissants & macarons. While others are classic desserts that I’ve never made and just want to ‘check off’ — pineapple upside down cake & lattice-topped pies.

So, without further ado, here’s my month by month 2019 Baking Bucket List!

January – macaroons
I’ve attempted macarons before but they were horrible and turned out the size of my palm so I’d like to give them another shot.
February – raw, vegan brownies
Whole Foods used to serve the most delicious raw brownie and they no longer make it so I want to recreate this recipe.
March – chocolate babka
Babka looks delicious and it will allow me to practice working with yeast — my nemesis.
April – drip cake
I’ve attempted a drip cake before but it was a mess. I thought this would be a good birthday cake for myself.
May – lemon bars with raspberry sauce
Back home in Rochester, New York there’s a restaurant that served a lemon bar with raspberry sauce and it was seriously delicious. So I’m looking to recreate it.
June – pineapple upside down cake two ways: rhubarb upside down cake & peach bourbon upside down cake
I remember my Mom making pineapple upside down cake growing up and I want to give it a try myself.
July – lattice-topped blueberry pie also see my cranberry, pear and ginger pie with a braided lattice crust tutorial
I love blueberries and I think lattice pies are beautiful.
August – souffle
Possibly a chocolate souffle, maybe cheese.  It really depends on what I’m up for plus I’ve never made one.
September – millionaire’s shortbread
We enjoyed this is London and it was beyond delicious so I want to make it myself.
October – tuile cookies
Something so simple yet delicate and difficult to perfect. They will likely be stuffed with something, maybe a cozy fall mousse?
November – croissants
Again, another pastry I’ve made before but it was a failure since I killed the yeast. I’m hoping to have success this time around.
December – roll cake (round 1) & roll cake (round 2)
I’ve made a jellyroll before with my Grandma when I was younger but I don’t really remember it.  This may also turn into a yule log for the holidays since it’s a similar technique.
So there you have it, my 2019 Baking Bucket List.  I’ll definitely share my journey on the blog along the way and let you know my success and failures (hoping there’s few..)!
Do you have any baking or cooking bucket list items?

Smoked Cardamom Old Fashioned

June 19, 2018 by Alyssa

With a homemade curry leaf infused whiskey and a smokey cardamom sugar syrup, the Smoked Cardamom Old Fashioned has a nod of traditional Old Fashioned flavors with a smokey-sweet finish.

Smoked Cardamom Old Fashioned - neat

When <3M and I were in England, we visited an Indian street food restaurant, Mowgli, and had the most amazing Indian meal including a Smoked Cardamom Old Fashioned that blew my mind. The meal was wonderful and I even bought the [amazon_textlink asin=’1848993269′ text=’Mowgli cookbook’ template=’ProductLink’ store=’hermodernkitc-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’c345bb1d-73b2-11e8-bc3f-19ea1dc5b60b’] to recreate some of the delicious street food at home once we returned to the States.

Smoked Cardamom Old Fashioned Overhead

But strangely, of everything I tried at Mowgli, I couldn’t stop craving the Smoked Cardamom Old Fashioned.  If you recall, I’m not the Old Fashioned drinker in the family but <3M is and he’s quite the connoisseur!  He even weighed in with his friends to help me create a guide to Austin’s Best Old Fashioneds, so for me to crave this whiskey based drink, you knowit has to be good.

Smoked Cardamom Old Fashioned Neat

The Mowgli cookbook offered up the Smoked Cardamom Old Fashioned recipe but I made a few tweaks of my own so while this cocktail isn’t 100% the same Old Fashioned I enjoyed in Manchester, it’s very close.  In fact, <3M declared this Smoked Cardamom Old Fashioned in his top 5 of all time (and on some days, if he’s craving something different, in his top 3!).  Now, THAT is saying something.

This Smoked Cardamom Old Fashioned is heavy on the smoke due to the black cardamom pods. It also has a subtle sweetness from the syrup and apricot brandy. The finish is slightly earthy from the curry leaves themselves which you infuse into the whiskey, making this cocktail unique but with the traditional smokey-sweet Old Fashioned notes we’re all used to.

Curry Infused Whiskey

You can find fresh curry leaves at most Indian markets.  If you’re in Austin, I grabbed a bag from Gandhi Bazaar on William Cannon & Brodie. You’ll need about 1 ounce of leaves for 3 cups of whiskey.  When it comes time to choose your whiskey, I’d choose a quality bourbon based whiskey at a middle of the road price point like Bulleit Bourbon.

Creating the infused whiskey is simple! Just drop the curry leaves — stems and all into a jar, pour the whiskey over it and let it steep for at least two days before you make the cocktail. I let mine sit for 5 days then removed the leaves.

Smoked Cardamom Syrup

Although this is a smoked cardamom syrup, you’re really just looking for BLACK cardamom pods.  Black cardamom pods have a naturally smoky flavor so don’t go killin’ yourself looking for smoked cardamom pods. And don’t fall for any pricey ‘smoked black cardamom pods’ you find on the internet. My advice is to again, hit up your local Indian store for this ingredient.

If you’ve ever made a simple syrup, this is that exact same process. It’s a 2:1 ratio of granulated sugar to water, heated to a boil on the stovetop and stirred until the sugar is fully dissolved.  Next, you drop about 3 ounces of black cardamom pods into a jar, pour the hot syrup over top and let it sit for at least two days.

Afterward, you can use the syrup as-is but I chose to strain out the pods over a fine mesh strainer as they released black specs into the syrup and I wanted a clean, clear syrup.

Once you have these two key ingredients, the cocktail comes together in minutes.  It’s as simple as pour, ice, & garnish. You can choose to serve the Smoked Cardamom Old Fashioned over ice (I’d recommend [amazon_textlink asin=’B00I3LDJJW’ text=’a large ice cube’ template=’ProductLink’ store=’hermodernkitc-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’3d6d4a15-73b4-11e8-b914-99cf9ce54721′]) or you can shake it quickly in a cocktail shaker, strain out the ice and serve it neat.  I prefer mine over ice as I enjoyed the cocktail more as the ice melted.

If you’re looking for a meal to pair your Smoked Cardamom Old Fashioned with try making my Murgh Malai Tikka, an Indian-spiced grilled chicken kebab.

Eating East London & Tips for Food Tours

May 9, 2018 by Alyssa

The culture experience, paired with the food, made our Eating East London food tour a deliciously wonderful trip.

One of my favorite ways to explore a city is through a walking food tour.  You get to see the city, experience the culture, and you get insight into the unique parts of a city’s history that are typically glossed over during school.

East_London_Food_Tour_Featured_2

Alyssa & Mayank on Thames River

For our latest trip to London, I wanted a food tour that would give <3M and I a taste of everything London had to offer.  London really is a melting pot of culture and although London has a reputation for not being much of a food city, it really is rich in food history!

When I think of England, there are a few food items that come to mind fish & chips, curries, bread pudding, English tea, and ales.  My goal with our food tour was to get a taste of each of these items all in one blow and the East London Food Tour by Eating Europe gave me just that!

Our food tour began at Spitalfield’s Market and ventured through the old Jewish community, down Brick Lane, and ended in the more hipster area of East London.  We learned the history of Spitalfields, wandered down hidden alleyways that were saved from WWII bombings, saw the home of Game of Thrones Star Jonathan Pryce, learned about the Bangladesh community in London, and experienced a bit of street art from graffiti to metal mushrooms, to miniature bronze statues hidden along our path.

It really was a wonderful way to explore the culture, food, and history of London.

If you’re ever interested in doing a food tour while visiting a city, here’s a few tips!

  • Take the morning tour and skip breakfast
    • Skip breakfast completely or having something light like coffee & a piece of fruit
    • You will eat a bunch and it’s best to be a little hungry at the start of your tour
    • Choosing the morning tour will allow you enough time to digest throughout the day that way you don’t spoil any evening plans you may have

  • Wear comfortable shoes and bring layers
    • This goes without saying but obviously, these are walking tours and you do quite a bit of standing and walking.  I believe we covered a little over 3 miles on our London tour
    • On our tour day in London the weather was quite chilly with lots of sun. When we walked through a few of the alleyways, it got even colder and I was thankful to have my scarf and hat to throw on. Other times, while standing on the sidewalk learning about the history of the area, I felt really warm and was happy to remove items to stay cool along our tour.

  • Bring a bottle of water
    • Although it’s likely you’ll be given water at every stop along your tour, I suggest carrying a bottle with you anyways
    • Sometimes there may be long stretches of time between restaurants as your guide stops to talk about the city or the buildings you’re passing
    • I also liked having water in between to ‘cleanse my palette’ and prepare for the next tasting
Aladin, Brick Lane

Aladin's Garlic Chicken Tikka Masala

  • Taste everything but don’t feel like you have to finish it all
    • Portions on a food tour are bigger than you’d expect. You’re not getting samples but neither a full meal either at each restaurant.
    • My advice is to absolutely taste everything on the tour but only finish those items you feel are seriously delicious.  For me, that meant finishing the Millionaire’s Shortbread but leaving bread behind from the bacon sandwich and salt beef beigel.  It also meant having a bite of the bread & butter pudding before deciding this just wasn’t for me!
Beigel Bake

Beigel Bake, a Jewish bakery

Salt Beef Beigel Sandwich

  • Ask for recommendations
    • You’re guide has a wealth of knowledge and is definitely a foodie if they’re leading a food tour! Ask your guide for dinner recommendations, for the one restaurant they bring visitors to, and where their favorite bar or cafe is in the city.  It will help you get out of the tourist rut!
    • And if think your guide is stellar, obviously tip them!

Staying Hydrated with Spindrift Sparkling Water

April 6, 2018 by Alyssa

There’s a lot of sparkling water hitting the market but Spindrift is the only one made with real fruit juice! I sampled every flavor Spindrift has to offer and ranked them top to bottom. Check it out and let me know your own favorites.

Spindrift Lineup

The sparkling water market has grown big time in the past few years.  In fact, this year the U.S. market’s projected to hit $4.5 billion in sales and will grow to over $6 billion by 2021! This past year, 2017, also marked the 13th consecutive decline in soda sales. I personally see as a good thing — consumers are becoming more educated on the impacts of soda and looking for alternate ways to satisfy their thirst.

However, while I still enjoy sodas (Diet Coke, please!) I view them more as a treat, knowing that full-calorie sodas are loaded with sugar and diet sodas are equally as bad, laden with chemicals linked to a laundry list of health issues. My soda habit started to decline back in college and is now something I enjoy only a few times a year.

Spindrift Sips

I naturally drink a lot of water. In fact, I’m pretty sure I drink more than most people.  I measured my water intake for a few weeks back and found I drink about 10-12 glasses of water per day!  That’s a lot, considering most people have 8 glasses as their goal and rarely hit the mark.

However, I often get bored with plain water and while I love iced tea, I forget to make it in advance.  Flavored sparkling waters are tasty, ready to drink, and motivate me to reach my daily hydration goals with a variety of flavor and a bit of bubble. There’s a few brands of sparkling I enjoy most and one of the happens to be Spindrift, which I initially happened across at Trader Joe’s.

I like Spindrift for a few reasons

  • The water is flavored with real fruit juice — and it’s obvious in taste and when checking out the ingredient list on the back of the can
  • It was created by a guy who had a Diet Coke habit he wanted to kick (which I can 100% relate to!)
  • The fruit & veggies are sourced from places that are KNOWN for growing the best-tasting fruits or veggies of their kind — citrus from California, berries from Oregon, mangos from India…
  • and 1% of their sales is donated back to environmental organizations

My local Austin TJ’s only carries a few select flavors of Spindrift and I typically stick to the Blackberry or Raspberry Lime which are both delish! But, luckily for me, I was able to get my hands on the rest of Spindrift’s offerings, including their new Half & Half, which is like an unsweetened, bubbly Arnold Palmer.

In case you’re curious, here’s my full ranking of Spindrift flavors!

Spindrift Raspberry Lime

#1 Raspberry Lime
Yup, the first flavor I ever tried is still my fav. It’s a subtle raspberry flavor with a hint of citrus. It’s slightly sweet and seriously refreshing. Definitely, something I’ll reach for all summer long.

#2 Grapefruit
This was honestly a toss up for first place. If you really love real grapefruit then you’ll love Grapefruit Spindrift. It has that grapefruit zing and I can see this being mixed with tequila in the summer for a low-cal Paloma!

#3 Blackberry
If you love berries, this is delicious. Clean fresh flavor and not overly sweet.

Spindrift Orange Mango

#4 Orange Mango
This is more mango than orange IMO but I’m not complaining, I love mangoes! And since they’re typically high in sugar, this is a great way to satisfy a mango craving.

#5 Half & Half
The Half & Half is new and really nice if you’re looking for a tea alternative. It’s strong on the lemon flavor, where I’d personally prefer more tea. And although it’s a play on the Arnold Palmer, it’s not sweet like the traditional mix.

Spindrift Lemon

#6 Lemon
Can’t go wrong with a classic water and lemon combo. This honestly reminds me a lot of a mellow lemonade. And although it’s 6th on the list, I’ll probably drink this a bunch when the temp hits 90 this summer.

Spindrift Strawberr

#7 Strawberry
I had high hopes for this flavor but sadly the strawberry essence was missing for me. I really wish the strawberry was stronger. I’d love to see this with a bit of mint in it, too.

Spindrift Cucumber

#8 Cucumber
This was by far my least favorite. It has a very strong cucumber flavor and while I do like cucumber, it was way too much for me personally. I can see this being a hit at a spa or by the pool for some.

Have you tried Spindrift yet? What’s your favorite flavor? What other sparkling water brands do you enjoy?

Spindrift did not sponsor this post but I did receive a sampling of products.  All photos and opinions are my own.

My Rodan + Fields Brightening and Lash Boost Experience

March 21, 2018 by Alyssa

It’s been just over 3-months since I started the Rodan + Fields REVERSE Brightening regimen and began using Lash Boost. Today I’m sharing my experience, results, and what’s next for me in terms of skincare.

After watching months of before and after photos appear on my Facebook feed for the Rodan + Fields regimen and jealously yearning for long beautiful lashes, as promised by R+F Lash Boost, I gave into a Cyber Monday deal and splurged on a skincare and Lash Boost set. I started the regimen and began using Lash Boost in early December. It’s been about 3-months of consistent use, maybe missing 5-days total, and I’m happy with the skincare results and have seen definite lash growth.

Rodan + Fields Header

A Bit About My Skin

I naturally have pretty clear skin, I don’t really remember having breakouts growing up and even now, I only have a rogue pimple every now and then on my chin.  I am also blessed with relatively small pores and smooth skin. I consider my skin to be normal in terms of oil but err on the side of sensitive when choosing skin products.

My skin does have some redness issues — specifically around my nose and cheeks, as evident in the before photo below. I also have moderate bags which are always covered with concealer. My biggest issues are a couple popped blood vessels that I’ve had forever and are a bit more noticeable, adding redness to my face. Honestly, I don’t remember not having them — one’s under my left eye and the other on my nose.

My Skincare Routine Before Rodan + Fields

Before using R+F I simply washed my face in the morning while in the shower with [amazon_textlink asin=’B004D248U4′ text=’Neutrogena Natural Face Wash’ template=’ProductLink’ store=’hermodernkitc-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’f558ff08-2cf5-11e8-92ad-6994737b8512′] and tried to remove my makeup most days before going to bed — using a [amazon_textlink asin=’B00NR1YLDQ’ text=’Neutrogena make-up remover cloth’ template=’ProductLink’ store=’hermodernkitc-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’05ae838a-2cf6-11e8-86fc-5936c7ff5fff’], which obviously left some residue….  I also used an [amazon_textlink asin=’B001IM5VT4′ text=’Aveeno moisturizer’ template=’ProductLink’ store=’hermodernkitc-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’203018b3-2cf6-11e8-bf41-ddf73552101e’] twice daily once after I showered in the morning and again before bed.  Plus [amazon_textlink asin=’B004D2DR0Q’ text=’sunscreen daily’ template=’ProductLink’ store=’hermodernkitc-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’4111e9c5-2cf6-11e8-834a-ed6fcd55b8df’] during the sunnier seasons.

Also, a couple times a week I used a Lush exfoliator and this pumpkin mask for brightening but that was about it. And as I mentioned before, there are a few additional things I do daily (and continued to do during the R+F process) which I believe contribute to my skin health.

So in short, my before regimen was pretty straight forward, my skin was relatively good and I had a routine

  • [amazon_textlink asin=’B004D248U4′ text=’Face Wash’ template=’ProductLink’ store=’hermodernkitc-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’bf67ae55-2cf6-11e8-8fda-3f9c78fc85ed’]
  • [amazon_textlink asin=’B00NR1YLDQ’ text=’Make-up remove’ template=’ProductLink’ store=’hermodernkitc-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’ad959bb7-2cf6-11e8-ac35-2f5232d6a263′]r
  • [amazon_textlink asin=’B001IM5VT4′ text=’Moisturizer’ template=’ProductLink’ store=’hermodernkitc-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’9dde79c7-2cf6-11e8-9a7f-35019b09abb0′]
  • [amazon_textlink asin=’B004D2DR0Q’ text=’Sunscreen’ template=’ProductLink’ store=’hermodernkitc-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’89cab49e-2cf6-11e8-9a60-1970996945b6′]
  • Mask and Mask

But like I said, I was curious about R+F and seriously wanted longer lashes without having to go the falsies route which is expensive and requires constant fills.

Here’s How the Rodan + Fields Regimen Works

Rodan + Fields REVERSE Brightening

The REVERSE Brightening regimen comes with one bottle each of

  • Exfoliator
  • Toner
  • Dual Active Brightening Complex
    • Vitamin C Formula
    • Retinol Formula
  • SPF 50 Sunscreen

You begin the regimen by using each of the products once every other day then gradually work up to using each product twice daily.  My first time using the products, my skin felt quite warm and the products burned (I use this word cautiously but that’s how it felt) as there was more than a tingling and it was quite uncomfortable.

I started using the products every other day for the first week and after a few days, all of the burning subsided as my skin adjusted to the new products.

Knowing that my skin is a bit more sensitive, and finding it odd that the regimen required you to exfoliate twice daily (which I found to be quite excessive) I found my own rhythm with the R+F skincare products.  Here’s what I ended up doing

  1. Morning: Wash my face with my go-to [amazon_textlink asin=’B004D248U4′ text=’Neutrogena face wash’ template=’ProductLink’ store=’hermodernkitc-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’2fdf0792-2cf7-11e8-93fa-9dad4cec7e76′] and applied my regular [amazon_textlink asin=’B001IM5VT4′ text=’Aveeno moisturizer’ template=’ProductLink’ store=’hermodernkitc-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’421840d1-2cf7-11e8-802e-c9bfc66db236′] followed by the R+F sunscreen
  2. Nightly: Removed makeup with my [amazon_textlink asin=’B004D248U4′ text=’Neutrogena face wash’ template=’ProductLink’ store=’hermodernkitc-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’4c4255f8-2cf7-11e8-8249-e505922415f5′], followed by R+F toner then a pea-sized amount each of the R+F Vitamin C and Retinol formula
  3. Every Other Night: Exfoliated with the R+F exfoliating scrub followed by the rest of the regimen (toner, vitamin c, retinol)

My Rodan +Fields Skincare Results

Following this system I created for myself over the course of 3-months (December-March) here’s the results I experienced.

Rodan + Fields Results

As you can see my redness has disappeared and my skin is much more even overall so I believe the reigning worked.

But, I’m left asking myself — is it the specific R+F regimen that worked or was it the overall process of using an exfoliator, toner, and serum regularly that made a difference?

I wasn’t using these kinds of products (toner, vitamin c, retinol) before starting R+F and I’m curious to find out what would happen if I switch out the products (exfoliator, toner, serums) for something more natural/organic and used it as frequently as I used R+F.

Would my results be similar? Would my skin maintain it’s more even coloring?

After my R+F products run out, I’m leaning towards trying a similar regimen with product & ingredients that are better for my skin (at least according to Skin Deep Cosmetics Database site).

Are you still with me? I know this post is rather long but I wanted to group it all together.

Last Boost Results

So this is a little bit more straightforward. Before Lash Boost, I had short stubby eyelashes as evident below. I started Lash Boost the same time I started the R+F Brightening regimen and missed maybe 5 days of Lash Boost use throughout the entire 3-month period.

With Lash Boost, you apply it once nightly but it should be done only after thoroughly removing all of your eye makeup and clearing your eyes of any of the eye makeup remover residue. This will ensure Lash Boost is applied to your lashes directly rather than on top of makeup or remover residue.

Lash Boost Results No Mascara

My suggestion is to apply the boost directly to your top lashes at the base, right where the lash and your skin meet. When using the wand, I’d gently tap off excess boost from the wand back into the applicator bottle as you only need a thin application of the boost.

As directed, I applied Lash Boost to my top lashes with my eye closed, counted to 10 to allow the boost to soak through to my bottom lashes then opened my eye and repeated on the other side. I also found doing it this way (counting to 10) allowed the serum to dry slightly so nothing fell into my eyes.

Last Boost Results with Mascara

I’m extremely happy with my Lash Boost results. They are definitely longer even without any mascara but are accentuated even more when I apply a [amazon_textlink asin=’B0764N5S4X’ text=’primer + mascara’ template=’ProductLink’ store=’hermodernkitc-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’2e00b590-2cf8-11e8-abc3-59ff3413e85c’]. The lash growth is 100% noticeable and I’ve had compliments on my lashes from both friends and strangers.  It’s a product that I’ll likely continue to use and will buy again, although it’s pricey it’s still a savings compared to lash extensions over time.

Have you tried R+F regimen or the R+F Lash Boost? I’d like to hear about your experience and if you had similar results.

Three Things I Do Every Day for Healthy Skin Beyond Washing My Face

February 16, 2018 by Alyssa

My daily skin routine has been refined as I age. In addition to regular skin care products, I’ve added a few non-traditional practices to my daily routine. As a result, my skin is clearer, smoother and I’m more confident in my appearance! Take a look at what sparked this change!

When I started nearing 30, I became insanely aware of my skin. I’ve always known to take care of my skin and followed the basics for healthy skin…

  • Wear sunscreen when out in the sun
  • Drink water throughout the day
  • Wash your face before bed

But as I got older, I started to analyze every line and wrinkle on my face, trying to figure out if it was new or something that’s always been there.

Around this time, I also started to explore other ways to care for my skin and now do 3-things every day helps give me healthy skin that’s smooth, clear, and cared for as I age.

Healthy Skin Products

Collagen in my coffee

  • Every morning I put a scoop of Great Lakes Collagen in my coffee. Even when I travel, I bring little to-go packets with me to keep my morning routine consistent
  • Collagen is all the rage right now but strangely, I’ve been adding collagen to my daily routine for a few years. It all started when my Mom had knee surgery and I was exploring supplements she should take to increase her joint health. After researching collagen, I decided it was something I’d benefit from as well and added it to my own diet
  • A lot of people prefer Vital Proteins but I’m a fan of Great Lakes collagen. I’ve found that Great Lakes has less of an aftertaste when compared to Vital Proteins and it also dissolves better in cold liquids, which is key for my iced coffee in the summer
  • The benefits of collagen are huge! Here’s a few reasons why I love it
    • Added boost of protein
    • Improved joint health
    • Stronger nails
    • Younger, healthier skin
    • Improved gut health

Healthy Skin Portrait

Sip a greens drink daily

  • Every morning on my way to work I sip a greens drink, right now it’s Amazing Grass Detox + Digest
  • I mix my greens with a spritz of lime juice and a little liquid stevia to help cut the grassiness
  • This mix is alkalizing and provides my body and skin with extra vitamins and minerals
  • As an added benefit, it’s also great for gut health, something that I’m constantly dealing with
  • It’s also another great way to get in ~16 ounces of fluid each day which improves overall skin health, appearance, and fine lines by keeping you more hydrated

Apply a moisturizer with SPF

  • Yup a no-brainer, but I’m looking for something that’s +50 SPF unscented and can be worn under my makeup
  • Right now, I’m wearing the Rodan + Fields sunscreen, applying it every morning after I shower to my face, neck, and ears but I’ve also found the [amazon_textlink asin=’B001IM5VT4′ text=’Aveeno moisturizer’ template=’ProductLink’ store=’hermodernkitc-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’10736110-12a9-11e8-ad56-fdb7129c6185′] works well too, though a tad lower in SPF. If you have any suggestions for favorite SPF moisturizers, I’d love to hear them!

Making these three things part of regular routine has helped my skin become clearer and smoother and when I miss a few days in a row, I seriously notice a difference in the fine lines around my eyes.

Healthy Skin Products

It’s been a few months now that I’ve consistently kept to the routine for all three and I’m more confident in my appearance, wearing less makeup overall, and some days none! I truly feel like these health changes will ensure complexion benefits as I age.

What do you do regularly to take care of your skin as you age?

6 Positive Lifestyle Changes I Experienced during Dry January

February 1, 2018 by Alyssa

For the month of January, <3M and I gave up drinking, marking it a Dry January. Here’s what I learned during the month and the positive health changes that followed.

My decision to have a Dry January was not at all because <3M and I think we have a drinking problem, it was more just as a reset and a personal challenge. We saw Dry January as a fun health experiment and a way to save a bunch of money because we often go out for weekday happy hours and weekend meals that includes a few expensive rounds of drinks.

Dry January Rose

Now that January’s come to an end, I thought I’d share a few of the things I learned during Dry January and some of the positive health changes I noticed by cutting back my vino.

I found other ways to ‘wine down’ after work.

Before, it’d be a glass of wine while making dinner or mindlessly sipping on a glass of wine while I pounded out a few more work emails at the end of the night. It definitely wasn’t relaxing. In place of this, I started more self-care and found other ways to ease into my evening.

  • Spending with the dogs. I spent a lot more time with the pups, playing with them and their toys, cuddling, and longer, slower walks while listening to [amazon_textlink asin=’0735217688′ text=’audiobooks’ template=’ProductLink’ store=’hermodernkitc-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’f66b7fe2-0748-11e8-be31-b5c27be11e04′].
  • Coloring. Yup, adult coloring books. My mom gave me [amazon_textlink asin=’1533253935′ text=’this one’ template=’ProductLink’ store=’hermodernkitc-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’1d42e414-0749-11e8-aac5-95778cda6b92′] and a set of markers for Christmas, and I’ve really enjoyed coloring.
  • Reading. Not so many books but more magazines as I relaxed at night. I’m finally taking advantage of that [amazon_textlink asin=’B00I8P42US’ text=’Amazon Prime membership’ template=’ProductLink’ store=’hermodernkitc-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’30828fcb-0749-11e8-b139-8d46de29e86f’] that includes digital magazines from Kindle.

My skin began to glow!

Less alcohol had a serious impact on my skin and I’m really loving the change.

  • Without alcohol, I’m drinking more water.
  • As a result, I’ve noticed a difference in my complexion. My skin simply looks cleaner and less red.  I also have fewer lines — probably because I’m truly hydrated.

Dry January Rose

Improved stomach health with fewer aches and pains.

I’ve always had stomach issues but by avoiding alcohol in January, I experienced fewer stomach pains than normal.  I’m not 100% sure if this is due to the lack of alcohol but it’s the only big change in my diet.

  • I’ve also been drinking lots of kombucha which is full of good for you probiotics that may have contributed to my improved stomach health.
  • Again, because I was well-hydrated all month long, the extra water may have helped with digestion and to flush any bad bacteria from my gut.
  • And overall (maybe a bit of an overshare) I definitely experienced less bloating. And, funny enough, I got my 23andme results back this month and learned I  have a slight intolerance to gluten, so this wasn’t too surprising that once I cut out beer (which is filled with gluten and I also naturally eat a low-gluten diet) my stomach aches decreased.

Town Lake Views

Better sleep quality where I slept deeper and dreamt more.

Before I was restless — either ridiculously tired but not able to sleep through the night or I had trouble falling asleep.

  • Now I’m falling asleep much more easily. Usually with 15-20 minutes of heading to bed!
  • I’ve had deeper sleep accompanied by vivid dreams since forgoing alcohol. Prior to January, I can’t remember having a lot of dreams but this month, I dreamt A LOT. Very vivid, deep dreams, probably because I finally hit REM sleep for an extended period of time.
  • I’m waking feeling more rested and am more alert throughout the day.  I also feel like my body clock has adjusted to a regular wake and sleep time without the alcohol stimulant so it’s become more natural.

Increased my workout intensity throughout the month.

I work out 4-5 days a week, depending on my schedule. Sometimes my workouts weren’t 100% and I felt like I was phoning it in, but this month all of my workouts felt strong and like I was making the most of my time.

  • I’ve felt a true difference in my workout stamina and ability to sustain a greater intensity during workouts – likely a byproduct of quality sleep and recovery.
  • As a result, I’m lifting heavier weights than in the months prior. I believe this is a result of better hydration and rest days truly being rest days allowing my muscles to repair themselves without having to process alcohol and soaking in the deeper sleep.

We fattened our wallets.

Saving money was a guaranteed outcome of participating in Dry January.

  • <3M and I spent more time in the kitchen cooking at home. It was quality time and gave us something different to do together. It also became something we both looked forward to each evening (or at least I did!).
  • I learned to enjoy happy hours while drinking Topo-Chico which helped me concentrate more on the people and conversation.
  • Although we saved money, <3M and I still ate out but we transitioned to day-dates on Saturdays or Sundays and I loved it! It was such a treat to go out in the middle of the day for a nice meal — and it was still affordable because we weren’t dropping money on drinks.

Now that the month’s over, I thought I’d be eager to start drinking again but the truth is, I love the lifestyle changes that came with Dry January and it’s something I’ll keep in mind throughout the rest of the year — possibly choosing to drink only when I truly feel like it.

So rather than jumping to pour a glass of wine on February 1st, maybe I’ll at least hold off until February 2nd to cheers my Dry January success.

Have you ever challenged yourself to a dry month? What did you learn from the experience, was it similar to mine?

I’m getting married in a week

February 21, 2014 by Alyssa

4029

Did you know I’ll be married in a week?

Well, not legally – not filing for taxes together legally – but married in at least one half the world.

IMG_0203 (1)

We’ve been referring to these upcoming nuptials as “being married in the Eastern hemisphere.” And we’re constantly being asked how we’ll respond afterwards, when asked if we’re married, if we’ll refer to one another as husband and wife, if he’ll wear a ring back in the States, which anniversary we’ll  celebrate, etc?

The real answer isn’t I don’t know.
I’m pretty sure we’ll do whatever feels right or maybe the Eastern hemisphere joke will be carried out until the wedding in Austin – which is exactly 210 days after the wedding in India.

It’s strange – we never really had to talk about whether or not we should have two weddings or one. We both just knew we were going to have two weddings.  Because honestly, both <3M and I have different ideas of  “tying the knot.”

4052

To him, getting married meant a week of traditions and rituals, festive activities, grand attire, joyous music, dancing, and hundreds of people.

My idea included a white dress, a walk down the isle with my dad, cake cutting, sharing the experience with a handful of  people, and a day of romance.

Both drastically different yet each completely traditional.

And I love it.

IMG_6590

I love that we’re honoring both our cultures.  I love that we get to share this event with friends & family across the globe – not forcing them to choose whether or not they should make the 2000 mile journey one way or another to attend a single event   I love that they get to see our love and I’m looking forward to sharing the experience with them in India or Austin as <3M & I begin a new chapter of our life.

For us, two weddings means twice the opportunity to celebrate our love.  For us, it’s our normal.
